Reform the Criminal Justice System

Mass incarceration is a key cause and consequence of poverty. There are about 2.3 million people in prisons, jails and other correction facilities. When a person is incarcerated their family must find a way to make ends meet without a necessary source of income. A minor criminal record can prevent an individual from getting a job, housing or certain benefits contributing to cycles of multi- generational poverty.

Congress should put policies in place that support successful re-entry. Barriers to employment, housing, education and public assistance must be removed. “If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the Lord your God is giving you do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. Rather be openhanded and freely lend him a whatever he needs.” (Deuteronomy 15:7-9)
