Affordable, accessible Housing
Another way to reduce poverty is to invest in affordable, accessible, and decent housing. One in four renter households in the United States is extremely low-income. They pay one-third to one-half of their income on rent and utilities. Congress drags its feet when it comes to affordable housing. Again, the church could play a major role in this area. Building funds and special offerings should be dedicated to including housing for its congregants. Mega-churches with thousands of members should be working to help solve this problem. Can you imagine each church with housing units for its congregants in need?
